Buckham Gallery is an artist-run, non-profit art space in downtown Flint, Michigan. Located on the second floor of the former Perry Drugs building, this arts space features local, regional, and national artists exhibiting contemporary art. In addition to exhibitions, the space hosts events and open mic nights for area artists. You can visit the gallery with your friends and family at 121 W 2nd St, Flint, MI 48502.
This new location will give the gallery more room to host multiple events. The new location will also provide a wider variety of layouts, allowing for more flexibility in the way the walls are displayed.
As an art collective, the purpose of Buckham Fine Arts Project is to present innovative, mission-driven arts programming to the community. Each year, the group presents a four to five week visual arts exhibition. Additionally, the gallery works with other organizations and venues to support community events.
With the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the gallery is moving from its former location at 134 1/2 West Second Street to a new home in the former Perry Drugs building. This location will allow the gallery to move forward with its mission to enrich the cultural life of the central Flint area by featuring diverse, compelling, and accessible art.
During the 2022-2023 season, the Buckham Fine Arts Project will present 10 four to five week visual art exhibitions. Several of the exhibitions will focus on artistic expressions that are not represented by galleries in our region. Other highlights include a war-themed collection of work that will be featured in the annual group show. A Brown Bag Browse presentation, a “No Losers” raffle, and an “Affordable Art” exhibition will also be presented.
Aside from exhibitions, the Buckham Gallery also features a virtual viewing room that allows visitors to view the gallery’s inventory and artist biographies. In addition, the gallery regularly hosts poetry readings and interpretive dance recitals.
Buckham Gallery also provides opportunities for local artists to gain experience and exposure through its collaboration with the Greater Flint Arts Council. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals for solo shows, or they may choose to join an existing artist group to curate a gallery show. Generally, solo shows will be hosted in conjunction with one or two other artists. Check this place out.
Since the beginning of its inception, the Buckham Fine Arts Project has been committed to providing a platform for contemporary art in the Flint area. The group has hosted a wide variety of different shows, including mainstream photography, upcycled “dumpster” art, and mainstream paintings.
The next exhibition is entitled Entropy. Works in the exhibit will explore the effects of climate change, social politics, and environmental degradation. These issues are important to the artists, who recognize the importance of entropy and want to encourage sustainable living practices. By interacting with the community, the artists can teach others about how to reduce waste and live sustainably.
Next up for the Buckham Gallery is its six-week Winter Series in March. Following this, the group will host a six-week Spring Series in May. Also, the gallery will begin collaborating with the Arts + Culture Research Cluster at the University of Michigan-Flint. Continue on…
