During the Civil War, men from the county joined regiments that originated in the area. The most prominent of these regiments were the First and Second regiments of the Grand Army of the Republic, known as the “Fallen Legion.” This is in part because of the county’s high elevation, which makes for perfect conditions for a spirited wartime cavalry charge.

While the town isn’t a culinary hotspot, the area is full of friendly folks willing to share their expertise.
